Latest News

I don't post often, but when I do there's usually a lot to discuss...

So, straight to it:

I now have two more teachers available to take students at my drum school in Kreuzberg, Berlin; "Dr Paradiddles Wonderdrumporium".

Lessons can now be offered in English or Italian and we are open for new students :-)

I am personally almost fully booked now but the other guys are happy to take on new students...

Next, my updated portfolio.  I am in the process of updating both my teaching CV and my discography.  It's been busy and I have been working with some truly amazing people this year already:

I am looking forward to the music video for the single "Cold Call" by Marakesh which should be ready in a couple of weeks.  We shot the film in February in the deep, deep south of Berlin.  It's going to look incredible I think...  I will post it and spam you all when it's online.

I have also been working with two of the UK's biggest names in studio recording and education:  BIMM and The Abbey Road Institute.

I was lucky enough to have been a part of the opening at Abbey Road, Berlin last week and helped demo the drums and studio as part of the opening night.  It was a huge honour.

If you would like to know more about studying in Berlin either at Abbey Road or BIMM, they offer very different educational programs and I am happy to talk with you more about how they work and what the deal is.

As well as working with these two amazing organisations, I am still offering workshops and masterclasses at The Academy of Music and Sound in the UK, with a trip booked this month (March).  So, if you are in Swindon or Birmingham and want some drum type lesson, let me know and we can book it in - (I will be in the UK 14th to 19th March).

Today also sees the release of the album Sharks and Butterflies from Mr Dog The Bear featuring my playing.

https://www.facebook.com/mrdogthebear/

Last but not least, I had the extreme pleasure recently of working with a new young band, who only thought of a name for themselves after we'd recorded the album!

"Harpo Dell" spent a few hours getting drunk and playing music in my studio while I helped record and mix; an easy job when the songs and players are as good as these guys.  A raw, emotional, dark & brooding album, it was a short but beautiful experience - and Thursday I get to see them play live :-)  I am very excited...

Check out the record here.

Enough for now.

I will get on and update my CV
Byeeee
:-)

New releases

So much has been happening!  I have hardly had time to sleep...

...and I really don't know where to begin.

I am gonna go with alphabetical order:

A.  Arttraktiv Berlin.  I have been working with these guys the past few months to help advise and build a new recording studio.  The project is underway and should be completed by the end of the summer.  We have some amazing equipment being installed and I will be heading up the producer team, (including myself), with a bunch of super fantastic guys on-board ready for any music project.  They even have a grand piano in the place - it's amazing!  I am very honoured and excited to be working on such a fantastic project and can't wait until it's ready to go!  If you need a place to record and want your choice of producer, contact me or directly with arttraktiv - info@arttraktiv.de
They also have hundreds, (literally!), of practice rooms, alongside music education programs and other musically creative spaces.  GET INVOLVED!
B. The Blowbacks.  I hear that the album is almost finished...  Until it's release, go have a listen to some of the tunes on their Soundcloud here.

C. Cymbals.  I have been using Diril Cymbals for about 7 years now.  They are amazing handmade Turkish cymbals, which not only compete sonically and visually with the top name brands, but also cost half the price...  In fact, I would go so far as to say, these actually exceed (in most cases) the top end series of the big 4 or 5 top name brands; These cymbals really are twice the value and without any compromise.  I love them.  If you want to try some or need any new cymbals, get in touch - I can order direct from Turkey.

D. Deja Nova Trio.  An even further departure in style from my rock roots.  I have joined this beautiful Harp and Bass duo to complete the trio on stage and hope to perform more in the future.  Swing and Jazz style loveliness.

F. Flemming Borby.  Having recorded on Flemming's album "Somebody Wrong" earlier this year, the record is now out to buy.  We also played a couple of shows to release the video and the single "Somebody Wrong" here in Berlin and look forward to the official album release party in September.  Listen on Soundcloud here.  Watch the Video for "Somebody Wrong" here.

I. The Incredible Disappearing Boy.  The record is out now.  If you like Americana style music, check out this EP.  One of the finest I've ever had the pleasure of playing on, and with some deservedly fantastic reviews, this EP should be in your record collection...  (even if you don't like Americana - it should still be in your record collection).

L. Le-Thanh.  Well, what can I say about Le-Thanh...?  I recorded the album last year and it finally had it's release a month or so back.  Instead of trying to describe the sound, it's probably better if you read a review, or even better, listen for yourself and decide for yourself how beautiful this record actually is.  (Or maybe watch this video of us playing in a cinema)

M. Mr Dog The Bear.  Post-Rock, Alternative, Instrumental, Soundtrack style goodness...  The first EP from Mr Dog The Bear will be out in September/October this year but work towards the second EP is already underway...  There have been a couple of nice reviews for the debut release already and also some airplay!  Listen here, here, here, watch here, or here and read a lovely review here!!!

N. Nadav Meir.  Nadav is an Israeli singer-songwriter.  I recorded drums for his debut album earlier this year and it's now out to buy.  A collection of emotional songs, this was an amazing album to have been a part of.  Listen here.  Or even better - buy it now and listen again and again...

P. Pop Music, Song-Writing and Production.  Last year was extremely busy for recording, having been featured on about 17 albums and music projects around the world.  It's strange as a busy session musician - It's embarrassing to admit, but I sometimes forget some of the work I've done...  A friend recently asked me how I manage to do so much; I think I just prepare for whatever the next project is, whether it's a live show or a studio recording or a music video.  Then I move on to the next one.  So, it's easy to lose track of some things as I always seem to be moving forward.

I even find it hard to update this blog so often - I think my last post was about 4 months ago.

Anyway, I digress...  In the past 4 month (since my last post), some interesting work has come my way and I have diversified hugely, opening up a lot of new opportunities for myself.  Not only am I playing drums for an eclectic and assorted collection of bands and musicians, teaching at my school, working on a new studio build and running my rockschool club for young musicians, but I am now also mixing, writing and producing music.  The first proper project I have is co-writing an album with German pop singer Charlotte Giers.  It is a challenge, but it is amazing work and so exciting to be involved in so many new creative ways.  I think I have found a new love in production and song-writing.  Creating music in the studio is, it seems, my latest passion.  And I am excited about what Charlotte and I can produce together.

R. Radio & Reviews.  BBC Radio Introductiong, Radio 1 Germany, Amazing Radio and many, many reviews for a lot of the music I have recorded.  Here's a list:

Amazing Radio - Mr Dog The Bear
Radio 1, Germany - Le-Thahn
BBC Radio Introducing - The Blowbacks (no longer available online)
BBC Radio Introducing - FlyCatFly (no longer available online)
Sentric Music Podcast - The Incredible Disappearing Boy
Dancing About Architecture Album Review - Le-Thahn
Dancing About Architecture Album Review - FlyCatFly
Gig Monkey Review - The Incredible Disappearing Boy
Americana UK Review - The Incredible Disappearing Boy
The Siren Sound Review - Mr Dog The Bear

S. Sticks. Agner Swiss Drumsticks are now supporting me and Dr Paradiddles Wonder Drumporium!  Whoop!

T. Teaching.  I still have space available for private students at Dr Paradiddles.  I am still running drum workshops at Super Sessions, Berlin and will probably be offering some workshops in the UK later this year (December) as well as something more regular at Arttraktiv, Berlin.  I am in need of a bass player for my Rockschool band.  Hit me up should you be interested in any of this.

U. UK.  Sam Bates.  Sam.  He seems to be the only reason I travel back to the UK.  I have flights booked mid-August to record an album which Sam is producing.  He won't even tell me who for.  I love you Sam.

V. Verb.  This project is so new that I can't give you any links or pictures or anything!  But, I can tell you what it's all about:  I am so so lucky that I have began making some sounds with Ksenia Zake, the unbelievable Latvian singer and guitarist, formerly the front woman from Tribes Of The City.  It's just the two of us so far, but we are making a lot of noise...  Watch this space.
Listen to Tribes Of The City here.

New Videos

I am in some new videos!  Watch them below:

==================================================================

Firstly, a recording session I did in March this year in the UK, with The Incredible Disappearing Boy himself, Mr Sam Bates.

Also in the studio were the hugely talented Cinzano Taylor and Jon Bucket to help make this record one of the best I've ever been a part of.

Thanks to all you fantastic guys and also to Paj and Henry and Thom for the videos.

This is "Where I Wanted To Be" by The Incredible Disappearing Boy.

You can also watch the documentary about the making of the EP here:

==================================================================

Next up is a live video from the record release show for my band FlyCatFly.  Recorded by Eike Klingspohn and filmed and recorded by the venue Hinterhof Arpke (all of these guys totally rock), this song is "A Perfect And His Slave".  Interestingly, this song isn't actually featured on our debut album, but it will be on the follow up - which is already under way!

==================================================================

Another 'studio shot' music video comes from Mr Flemming Borby and his Flying Saucers band - (I am a flying saucer; another interesting fact is that there is a flying saucer picture on the front cover of the FlyCatFly album!)

This one was made at the legendary Funkhaus in Berlin earlier this year and was shot and edited by Chris Koll.
The song is "Somebody Wrong" and is out as a single now.  It is also from Flemmings forthcoming album, out in the summer 2015.

==================================================================

Last but definitely not least is another video from Zeki Min's debut album I played drums on.  We're recording the follow up next month in Bremen, Zeki's new home town...

Enjoy!

17.12.14

Merry Xmas, 2014!

A lovely festive picture for you :-)

So, Christmas time is here again...  And that means 2015 is only a couple of weeks away.
It's been a busy, exciting, strange, happy yet mildly depressing year for me in 2014.
It started off well enough - A trip to the UK to record demos for a rather well-known singer, my drum school in Berlin starting to get busy, a few serious bits of remote session work which helped to break my studio in and various live projects in Berlin and across Germany; so all-in-all, not a bad start to the year...

...and it started to pay off too, with work leading to more work and my time being taken up more and more with recordings, teaching, shows, workshops...

The summer came and went with the end of this year full of promise, but then a series of unfortunate events meant I had to cancel everything for a month, and then with the end of the year looming it seemed like an uphill struggle to get motivated and make things happen again before the start of the new year.

The end of this year has, well, sucked.

Roll on 2015!!!!

But hang on...  this year isn't finished quite yet...

...so, before 2014 has gone, I'd like to offer a little gift of a free drum recording for anyone who wants it!

This Friday I have some spare studio time at Legato Sound Studio in Berlin and so can offer to record drums for FREE for one song for you - this is a one-time, one-off, limited to the first person to email me their song (mp3), offer.

The usual rules apply (rules and information), apart from you won't have to give me any cash for it.  The only other exclusion is, seeing as it's a free gift, I can't offer any revisions...

Apart from that, MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

And here's a list of thanks to the projects, recordings and bands I have played for this year:

Recording in 2014 - Thanks to:
The Blowbacks
Realized Soul
Josuke Sato

Live in 2014 - Thanks to:

Music education in 2014 - Thanks to:
All of my lovely students :-)

Special thanks to Ibrahim Diril at Diril Cymbals for his continued support and wonderful cymbals.

Thanks to every fantastical, amazing musician I have had the pleasure of working with this year.  I hope we can find more projects to work on next and beyond :-)
And I hope to meet more inspirational and talented people to work with in 2015!

27.6.14

Halfway through the year...

So far, 2014 has been a mixed year:  Some good, some not so good, some exciting stuff, some boring stuff, some promises not kept and some very nice surprises...

As far as my music and drumming goes, I have had a lot of varied projects so far with what looks to be like a lot more to come in the second half of the year.

I will think back and start at the beginning of the year and work forward chronologically up to now, and beyond...  This list is purely for recording work.  My live shows can be viewed here.

:

At the beginning of this year I had the opportunity to work with two amazing singer/song-writers, one here in Germany and the other back in the UK.

Zeki Min (ex-frontman of The Driftwood Fairytales) asked if I would play drums for his debut solo-album, "Majestic".  I of course said "yes"...  So, he and Mr Hadl (producer extraordinaire and bassist for the album), came over to my place and we recorded the album live in a weekend!
The resulting album is stupendous and I am extremely proud to have been a part of it...
We also played a few shows in Berlin and I was asked to help in the creation of this interactive video too:

Click on the icons and have a play around with the awesome interactiveness!!!

If you like your music to be edgy yet familiar, glorious, yet understated and acoustic with a punk attitude, then you should definitely check Zeki's debut album "Majestic" out immediately!
Visit Zeki's website here!
Buy Zeki's debut album "Majestic" here!

Not long after recording with Zeki I was asked to fly over to England to work with Mr Josh Kumra - we spent a week writing and recording demo's for Josh's new album.

Hopefully work on the album will commence soon and a release won't be too long in the waiting...
Visit Josh's official facebook page here!

I also have been involved with loops and beat-making.  Mr Ilkka Ala-Fossi, AKA Ile, used some of my loops in one of his songs which you can listen to on mysoundcloud, here:
"The Best Day (Demo)".
Visit Ile's SoundCloud page here!

A couple of months back started a surge of recording work with UK singer/songwriter Si Hall calling upon my [remote] service for his forthcoming E.P.
More along the lines of Chuck Ragan, Dave Hause and Tim Barry, Si's E.P. is almost ready to be unleashed on the world...
Find out more about Si Hall and his music here!

The work, coming in thick and fast, then took a slightly more exotic turn (no offence Si!):
The wonderfully colourful Mr Rameez Khalid emailed me and asked if I could record drums for his new single.

Another amazing opportunity...  I jumped at the chance and I must say it was a pleasure to work for such a talented and kind man.  I look forward to working again with Rameez sometime in the future...  Who knows, maybe I will even get to do some live work with him one day...?!
Visit Rameez's official facebook page here!

Keeping things international, I have been working on an album for Italian duo "Mr Dog The Bear".  The album is in the very early stages, but I am being encouraged to have a lot of input: Some production input (and happily a lot of creative input too!), the first song, (self-titled) can be heard on their soundcloud page here:
"Mr Dog The Bear"

This about gets me up to speed as far as the year has gone so far...
...but what does the rest of the year have in store?!!!
Well, let me divulge a little more:

There are 2 new projects definitely coming up in the next couple of months, not to mention the continuing & "in-progress" work I already spoke about and also the possibility of 2 or 3 more projects which are "under-discussion"...

The two projects coming up that I can say are both quite simply amazing:

The first is a chance for me to stretch my funk muscles.  Rachelle Jeanty has been singing professionally for the past 20 years. She has toured the world as a backing vocalist for Celine Dion and has given performances as a solo artist at ''Les Francofolies de MontrĂ©al'', with the Vienna Boys Choir and at the United Nations in New York.

A powerful and soulful presence on-stage (I've seen her twice and she is quite simply outstanding), the talented Ms Jeanty has a new project with an American based guitarist and song-smith underway, which will see me on-board as the beats man - excited is an understatement!
Visit Rachelle's website here!

The most recent session to land on my table is a studio album for Le-Thanh Ho.  This one is so fresh, all I can say at the moment is that the studio is booked for August and I am the drummer (unless I totally mess it up in rehearsals!)
Here's looking forward to working on this project as much as the rest!
Visit Le-Thanh Ho's website here!
Visit Le-Thanh Ho's official facebook page here!

So, there it is.  2014 so far with some things to look forward too :-)

And I hope you enjoy the music as much as I do.

13.6.14

New Video

New video for "Gambling In Denmark" by Zeki Min!

The song (and in fact the album itself) was recorded in my studio in Berlin, (I played the drums)...  :-)

You can now buy Zeki's debut album "Majestic" HERE.

Enjoy!

Latest Session - Mr Dog The Bear

Mr Dog The Bear

The song-writing and producer team "Mr Dog The Bear" have recently employed me to record and mix some drums for their debut E.P. being released later this year...

And listen out for more coming soon...  :-)

22.5.14

Recent sessions...

Some of my recent recording sessions have now been completed and will soon be available to buy...

Here's one by the fantastic Zeki Min:

https://soundcloud.com/gunner-records/zeki-min-go-on

His debut solo album is coming out next month on Gunner Records, with the album launch party seeing us playing Live in Berlin on 6th June - you can find out more here:
http://zekimin.com/

Most of the recording for this album was played in two live sessions in my studio in Berlin...  :-)

You can read more about the recording sessions on Zeki's blog site:

and

I have also been recording an eclectic mix for some artists from all over the world, including a single for an Indian singer and composer which mixes traditional Indian musical ideals with a western pop groove, a post-punk EP for an English singer and song-smith and starting on a soul album for an amazingly talented singer here in Berlin.  Once I have official info I can share links for both projects...

There are lost of other projects under way, but only in their infancy...  as soon as I can, I will post up some links to the lovely music I am lucky enough to be a part of.

Happy Music Days!
:-)

Website

Dr Paradiddles WonderDrumporium now has it's very own website:

In other news, I have been busy playing and recording for more bands and artists from across the world...  With 4 current musical projects underway I have a busy year ahead:  2014 see's my debut outings with FlyCatFly, ZekiMin, Frog Baseball and Strangers By Day, with each of these amazing bands releasing their debut album this year!

My tour diary can be viewed here:

And, if I wasn't busy enough already, it looks like I have at least 2 more recording and live projects lined-up this year both in Germany and the UK, aaaaand, I am should also be recording some drums for Mr Si Hall - fans of Chuck Reagan pay attention!

(I should really get on that immediately before I get my arse kicked...)

6.2.14

Session Exchange

What a brilliant resource for remote session musicians!

Here's my page:

Back again...?

I flew back from England on Monday after spending 70 hours in the studio with some truly amazing musicians...

If being asked to attend a song-writing and recording session by the UK's "next biggest producer" wasn't enough, the fact that it was for Josh Kumra made it an extra special honour.  If you don't know who Josh Kumra is, you should definitely have a listen...  His songs are beautiful, his lyrics connect and his voice, well, that's something else entirely...

Mr Sam Bates
I've been lucky enough to play for some outstanding bands and musicians in my career and Josh has to be right up at the top of the list; Witnessing the magic when an artist can play a tune with perfect emotion and intent is something that always gets me, but to see it done in one take, the sun shining through the window shining off the guitar and with the fire crackling in the background, that is a moment I don't think I'll forget in a long time...

Hopefully this past weeks session won't be the last time I get to work with Josh and the team.

I am very excited about 2014.  It has obviously started extremely well, not only with the session last week, but also having already played a couple of shows with Strangers By Day.

There will definitely be more shows, not only from Strangers, but also from other projects and bands I am working with:

FlyCatFly are playing a show in Arpke, Germany in July (7th) along with some Swindoners!  I am hoping this won't be a one off!

On the same bill, and also with some stand-alone shows, I have been working with Zeki Min on his solo album (mixing in progress).  I can't wait to hear the finished product...

The extremely intense - (I think that's probably the most apt adjective) - "Frog Baseball", also have an album in the mixing stages and will be ready to explode live soon.

Dr Paradiddles WonderDrumporium is getting busier too, but still I want more!  I get bored when I don't have a million things to do!  So, if you need some drums recorded (anywhere!), or if you are in Berlin and want some drum lessons, please get in touch!

21.9.13

STILLE POST

A game for (remote session) recording musicians.

The concept:

About 5 years ago I came up with an idea for a game.  The game basically being a musical version of Chinese Whispers.  ("Stille Post" is the German name for the game "Chinese Whispers".)
Since I am currently sitting in my drum recording studio waiting for that "next session", I thought now would be a great time to start the game!

Chinese Whispers, (if you didn't play it when you were a kid), is a game in which one person whispers a message to another, which is passed through a line of people until the last player announces the message to the entire group.

As a drummer it has always been the case that I am last to write my part, or asked by another musician or song-writer to play something that they already have in mind.  And, specialising in contemporary styles I generally write a piece of drums or percussion that "fits" with what is already being played, or end up playing something that suits a musical idea.  This, after many years of playing in bands, has kind of led me to be a little creatively frustrated.  Don't get me wrong, I love playing drums so much and I really do enjoy working with other musicians loads, but the idea for the game just popped into my head one day when I was wondering how a song would end sounding up if it started with literally just a tempo.  I thought, "this would give me 100% complete freedom to just write and play something on the drums".  A blank canvas and creative freedom!  Whoop!

So, how will it work?:

The Starting Point.

The first person, or starting point, for this game is tempo and rhythm.  Musical style notwithstanding, this can be literally anything!  And, because it's my game, I will always be the starting point!

The End Point.

The last person involved has to be a producer.  Someone who gets everything that's been recorded and makes some kind of sense of it!  And, again, being as this is my game, the first round will come back to me as an end point.  If this experiment works and there is a round 2 (or more!) then other producers could end up playing.

The Bit In The Middle.

This is the musical message that will be passed along a line of musicians without any one of them hearing the entire piece until the end...

Playing The Game:

After I have created some rhythmical foundation - the starting point - I will then pass on that drum part to player number 2 (player 2 being a melodic instrumentalist - ANY instrument).  Player 2 can literally play anything they want!  This can be as simple or complex as they want to make it.

Next, since player 1 (drums) has determined tempo and player 2 has determined key, from then on it's just a case of further players adding parts.  But, the game is this:  Player 3, ONLY gets sent player 2's part.  The drums will be removed...
Then, player 4 will be sent ONLY player 3's part.
Player 5, only player 4's and so on...

Make sense?

Now, in my mind, players 1 & 2 have already established tempo and key, so the rest of the players parts should, theoretically fit!

That's the whole fun of the game though - the final outcome won't be heard until literally, the very end of the game.  No one until the producer at the end will get to hear all the parts!
This might sound amazing!  It might sound bloody terrible!  Who knows?!  But that's the fun bit, right?!

The Rules:

The rules are very simple:  If you would like to play, simply email me - richmillindrums@gmail.com -  and I will send you "something" for you to record along to.  Then you will have a limited time of 1 week only to submit your recording back to me.  This should be sent as a WAV file.

Questions about copyright and money will be ignored.  This is a game for fun.  I am not intending to sell any of this music.  In fact, since joining Session Exchange, I thought this game would be a great idea for session musicians and singers to showcase what they can do with complete freedom and also have some fun in their down-time at the same time :-)

So, are you interested in playing?

Latest News

It's been a busy couple of month for remote sessions.  I have been kind of inundated with work, which is great and I have been working with some amazingly lovely and talented people from all over the place!  Here's what I've been up to:

Firstly was the fantastic Morgan Finlay, who asked me to record 4 tracks from his forthcoming album, "Fault Lines".  One track I played, "The Fisherman's Son", is up on Soundcloud as a pre-release listen.

You can hear it here:

The Fisherman's Son by Morgan Finlay.

I think the album is due for release next month - I can't wait to hear it.

Next was Mike Salisbury, a groovy Blues guitarist with a voice full of soul from Florida.  I recorded one track, "Mr Green", for his forthcoming EP which will be released sometime soon.

At the moment, the song is still in the mix-stage, but you can listen to Mike's music here:

Mike Salisbury on Soundcloud.

I have also been recording drums and percussion for the stage adaptation of The Golden Compass.
This project is due to be staged next month in the UK.

Not to mention the on-going FlyCatFly project, with
the first batch of 4 tunes recorded at my studio here in Berlin and with more recording booked in for later this month, the album should hopefully be ready for a full airing early next year.

There are other little bits and bobs coming my way, but it's never busy enough, so if you or anyone you know needs any drums or percussion, please contact me:

Touring 2013

It's been very infrequent that I post anymore.  Probably because I like to leave it until I have a decent amount to talk about each time...
So, the last post was all about remote recording from my custom drum studio in Berlin.  I am happy to say, since that post I have been very busy indeed...  A very interesting job being the most recent:  Recording the official (tbc) song for Eintracht Brauschweig FC (currently pushing for promotion to the German 1st division!)  If the song is chosen and confirmed as the official team song for 2012/2013 (which is looking pretty likely!), then I will have the pleasure of playing the song live at their last home game of the season!  Let's hope they get promoted :-)

So, that is one of a few live shows I am doing in 2013.  Most of the other touring is with the amazing Berlin based band, The Driftwood Fairytales.  They have a fantastic full time drummer, Jan, but due to other commitments Jan is unable to play and so I have been asked to tour across Europe this year with the band.  A full list of live dates are below.

The first shows of this year are actually this weekend in Germany where we will be joined on tour by Plummie Racket.  I might even raid the stage (along with Benni from The Driftwood Fairytales) and play a couple of tunes with him too!

As for everything else, I hope to remain as busy as possible.  I would love to keep the constant stream of recordings coming, I am still happily available to travel worldwide for any recording or live work and I may even have some University teaching soon in Berlin for dBs Music...

Maybe I'll see you soon at a show...???
